When you have a Director like Steven Soderbergh with his list of credentials like 1989’s sex, lies, and videotape, 1993’s Kafka, 1998’s Pleasantville & Out of Sight, 1999’s The Limey, 2000’s Erin Brockovich & Traffic and then a Futuristic theme, you can be rest assured, it is going to be thought-provoking. However, Solaris is a bit too much on the thought-provoking side – to the point it becomes boring and thought-numbing. George Clooney & Natascha McElhone give us emotionally intense performances but not enough to save the movie. Solaris tries to incorporate emotions, technology and the future all together to give you something in the likes of 2001-A Space Odyssey. But with one major flaw – it does not have the magic Stanley Kubrick had.
Overall Rating – 5 out of 10
